Biomethane is emerging as one of the main alternatives for the energy future and Dourogás is leading this innovation in Portugal. The company has paved the way by injecting biomethane into the national gas grid for the first time in 2022.
The Capital Verde report explores the positive impact of biomethane and highlights Dourogás’ pioneering advances.
Biomethane, a renewable gas that can directly replace natural gas, is gaining prominence on the global energy scene. Dourogás, recognised for its innovative vision, conducted a pilot project that introduced this alternative to the gas network in Portugal. In July 2022, the company inaugurated the project at the Urjais landfill site in Mirandela. Biomethane is derived from locally collected waste.
This revolutionary milestone saw biomethane injected into the network, supplying 10 industrial customers and 80 domestic customers. The project’s success has led the Ministry of the Environment to declare that this is just the beginning, to generalise this gas in Portugal.
Nuno Moreira, President of Dourogás, celebrates the triumph of the theory: biomethane can effectively replace natural gas and the infrastructure is prepared for this transition.
With bold plans for 2023, Dourogás plans to inject a “significant amount” of biomethane into the national gas network and continues to guide the country towards producing and exporting renewable gases.
Furthermore, Dourogás is leading the race to integrate biomethane into Portugal’s gas network. The company has overcome the initial challenge and paved the way for a more sustainable and greener future. Dourogás promotes a more circular economy and contributes to the greater goal of an energetically resilient and environmentally friendly Portugal by continuing to invest in innovative energies such as biomethane.
