At STCP – Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto, around 11.5 per cent of the natural gas bus fleet is fuelled by biomethane. The switch to this 100% renewable gas in 36 vehicles took place in November 2023.
Biomethane is produced and supplied by Dourogás through its service stations. The partnership between the group and STCP aims to decarbonise heavy passenger and freight transport. For Nuno Moreira, CEO of Dourogás, the choice of this renewable gas “represents an opportunity for immediate decarbonisation and an effective example of the circular economy, since it results from the recovery of waste into emission-free fuel”.
Cristina Pimentel, chairman of STCP’s Board of Directors, is confident about the change and says that “this incorporation of biomethane will allow us to increase the number of 100% emission-free vehicles, thus reinforcing our commitment to decarbonising our operation, as well as our desire to actively contribute to the quality of life of the people in the municipalities in which we operate.”
