Biomethane is taking on a central role in Europe’s energy transition, serving as a strategic solution for decarbonisation and industrial competitiveness.
Following the Joint Declaration of Commitment on Biomethane, several European companies and industries, including Dourogás, are strengthening their commitment to the production and adoption of this renewable gas as an integral part of the strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Biomethane: A sustainable alternative with vast scalability potential
Produced locally using European technologies, biomethane is the most scalable and economically viable renewable gas. In 2023, the combined production of biogas and biomethane in the EU reached 22 billion cubic metres, already representing 7% of Europe’s total gas consumption. Projections indicate a sustainable potential of 151 billion cubic metres by 2050, without compromising food production. This development will be made possible through new resources, such as crops on marginal land, and innovative technologies like hydrothermal gasification and methanation.
Biomethane: An ally in reducing emissions
Beyond reducing dependency on fossil fuels, biomethane plays a crucial role in lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Its use benefits sectors such as industry, transport (both land and maritime), households, and also contributes to reducing emissions from agriculture and waste management.
Measures to accelerate biomethane production in Europe
The declaration proposes a set of essential actions to unlock biomethane’s full potential:
Set long-term targets and support frameworks
- Define binding production targets for 2040 and 2050.
- Harmonise the implementation of European regulations, such as RED.
- Create financial incentives to convert biogas plants into more efficient biomethane units.
- Facilitate licensing processes by designating projects as being of European public interest.
Promote market-oriented solutions
- Recognise origin and sustainability certificates within emissions reporting systems.
- Remove barriers to biomethane purchase agreements by industries and companies.
- Ensure an efficient internal market for renewable gases, with cross-border free circulation.
Ensure political and institutional support
- Develop a European inventory of the biomethane market and promote international cooperation.
- Strengthen European Commission teams dedicated to biomethane valorisation.
Dourogás’ Commitment
At Dourogás, we share this vision and are committed to the sustainable development of biomethane production and usage. We believe this is a decisive step towards a cleaner, safer, and more competitive energy future for all of Europe.
