Dourogás has joined the World Biogas Association and more than 200 international organizations in signing the open letter “Let Green Gas Count”, addressed to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), the most widely used international reference accounting for greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).
This global appeal aims to ensure that renewable gases, such as biomethane, are recognized fairly in international emissions reporting criteria, namely in the accounting of scope 1 emissions, associated with companies’ direct emissions.
The urgency of a clear and equitable framework
The GHG Protocol recently withdrew the guidelines that recognized the use of biomethane certificates as a valid instrument in accounting for emissions. This decision has generated uncertainty and created a competitive disadvantage for renewable gases, holding back investment and hindering the development of new projects.
Much of the biomethane marketed in the European Union and the United States is supported by the mass balance principle, a practice recognized for guaranteeing the traceability and sustainability of this energy vector. The lack of specific guidelines puts market confidence at risk and compromises biomethane’s role in decarbonizing the economy.
A collective message in the name of the energy transition
The open letter “Let Green Gas Count” is a call for coherence. It argues that, like other sustainable technologies, renewable gases should also have a clear and stable regulatory framework that is aligned with global climate commitments.
The lack of recognition of biomethane certificates in sustainability reports affects not only producers, but also traders, market agents and end users who are committed to incorporating cleaner energy solutions.
Dourogás’ Commitment
We believe that renewable gases are an essential part of the energy future, actively contributing to reducing emissions, promoting the circular economy and driving the achievement of carbon neutrality targets, both at national and transnational level.
By signing this letter, we reinforce our commitment to defending an energy sector that is fairer, more sustainable and better prepared for the challenges of the future.
