Dourogás GNV has officially joined the portfolio of Iberis Capital, a Portuguese private equity and venture capital manager that led an investment of more than 30 million euros in this operation. The transaction, which has already been approved by the Competition Authority, represents an important milestone for the company, which is now entering a new phase of expansion and growth.
New growth cycle for CNG in Portugal
Iberis Capital’s entry into the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) segment is a strategic investment in a sector that is expanding strongly, especially through the growing use of biomethane. This renewable alternative stands out for its ability to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and is especially relevant in heavy passenger and freight transport.
“We already have the most sustainable alternative energy solution to traditional fossil fuels on the market in the heavy goods and passenger transport segment”, says Pedro Oliveira, CEO of Dourogás GNV. “In 2024, biomethane accounted for more than half of the company’s fuel sales, well above the legal target for biofuels (13 per cent). Now, the aim is to accelerate the incorporation of biomethane into the total energy sold to our customers and to expand the network of petrol stations”, he adds.
Iberis Capital, which has more than 600 million euros in assets under management, believes in the potential of this business to boost sustainability in mobility. “We are sure of the enormous added value of this Dourogás business unit. The company has developed an operating model to replace natural gas with biomethane, which is a 100 per cent renewable gas. This makes it possible to move heavy vehicles, for example buses for public passenger transport, in a completely sustainable way,” explains Diogo Chalbert Santos, partner at Iberis.
The current management team remains in charge of operations and will also become a minority shareholder, demonstrating the strategic alignment of all those involved in the company’s future. The operation also included a minority investment by Mello RDC.
The strategic importance of biomethane in sustainable mobility
